Poetry and Paint

In a world where perfection is often glorified, I find beauty in imperfection. As an artist, I'm drawn to the imperfect, the flawed, and the real. This led me to create a series of four artworks, each celebrating the perfection of imperfection in its own unique way.
Using watercolor as my medium, I began by painting the human figure, specifically women, with expressive curves and nuances that reflect the diverse essence of the female form. In a society where unrealistic standards of beauty prevail; I wanted to challenge the notion of perfection and celebrate the beauty of authenticity.
But I didn't stop there. I then meticulously re-drew each figure using India ink, adding depth and contrast to the paintings. The background, painted with acrylic, serves as a rebellious backdrop to the raw, unfiltered beauty of the human form, where I intentionally allow the color of the paper to bleed into the background as a defiant form of expression.
What makes these pieces truly special is the handwritten poem that accompanies each artwork. As a left-handed artist, my handwriting naturally leans to the left, defying the conventional standards of perfection. In school, I was often punished for my imperfect handwriting, forced to stay after class to practice until it resembled the ideal. But I refused to conform. Instead, I embraced my unique writing style as a symbol of my individuality and authenticity.
With rebellious spirit, I present these artworks as a tribute to the perfect imperfection that defines us all. Let us celebrate the beauty of authenticity, the allure of imperfection, and the power of embracing who we truly are.

'Warrior Woman' is a powerful exploration of gender dynamics and the resilience of the female spirit in the face of adversity. This striking diptych, composed of two triptychs, delves into the complex interplay between male aggression and female strength, inviting viewers to engage with its thought-provoking narrative.
In the first triptych, the male figure stands tall and confrontational, his fists clenched in readiness for conflict. His gaze pierces forward, embodying a traditional notion of masculine power. Contrastingly, on the adjacent canvases, the female figure adopts a protective stance, her hands outstretched in a gesture of restraint. Despite her vulnerability, there is an undeniable strength emanating from her, emphasized by her pregnancy, symbolizing the potential for new life and transformation.
The artist employs a dynamic mix of charcoal, black, and white, punctuated by bold accents of red and yellow oil pastels, to imbue the figures with raw emotion and intensity. Vivid acrylic backgrounds, infused with a kaleidoscope of colors, serve as a backdrop to the central narrative, their geometric patterns adding depth and complexity to the composition. At the apex of each triptych, geometric halos encircle the figures, suggesting a divine aura that transcends earthly struggles.
Central to the artwork's message is the juxtaposition of traditional gender roles and the urgent need for societal change. Through evocative symbolism and expressive imagery, the artist challenges viewers to confront the pervasive issue of gender-based violence and advocate for a more equitable and compassionate world.
"Warrior Woman" serves as both a visual manifesto and a call to action, urging us to recognize the strength within ourselves and stand in solidarity against oppression. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of art to provoke dialogue and inspire change.

"Franklin Gutiérrez-Herrera" Obra Fuchsia 2020
Roger Mari conveys absolute tranquility, the perfect pose for this study, the intensity of the precise strokes, and the impact of that satin light focus in the background, offering a Warhol-esque touch of fuchsia. An affirmative construction of the drawing and the commitment of an artist presenting her best piece in the project to date. Curated by Diego Villavicencio. "Kimberly Yagual" Obra Purpura 2020
Roger Mari employs an established working method. He is interested in bodily planes supported on the canvas like a segmented architecture that must be joined together. He pays attention to the sequence, but he is particularly struck by the time he dedicates to each volume break. Flat colors are his weakness, and the effect of overloaded material is his signature as an artist. Curated by Diego Villavicencio. "Miguel Ángel Mera" Obra azul 2020
Each of the works we have glimpsed from Roger Mari's personal production is a continuation of the search for the impact of material on textured surfaces. The artist Alain Jacquet achieved this effect in his pop version of "Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe," and we believe that Roger follows the same path in his visual display. Curated by Diego Villavicencio. "Ana Rossi" Obra Amarilla 2020
Roger Mari creates a very subtle portrait in B pencil and acrylic. He focuses on the subject's pose and maintains continuity with his first publication. They explore the lines of traditional drawing but add content of particular hue (identifying color, monoprint with illumination) and venture into various supports. Curated by Diego Villavicencio. "Claudia Carrera" Obra Geometría de Colores
Roger MariArt presents a work distinct from his previous contributions, a figurative bodily study within a spatial geometric division that modifies the color and intensity of each sector. He resorts to pure colors to provide similarity with neo-pop artists. The design in this type of proposal is important because it allows for the proper and sequential arrangement of ochre, green, blue, and red variants. Curated by Diego Villavicencio. 'Serenity' Portrait of Sinay Mari (2020)
Medium: Acrylic on canvas Size: 38 x 48 inches Modern and Contemporary This captivating portrait embodies a fusion of modern aesthetics with contemporary sensibilities, reminiscent of the iconic style of Warhol. The subject, a brunette female, gazes outwards with a gaze that transcends the viewer's perspective, evoking a sense of intrigue and introspection. The play of light and shadow accentuates the subtle contours of her features, while the rich hues of dark and light brown, tinged with hints of red, lend a dynamic vitality to the composition.
The inspiration behind this artwork is deeply personal, capturing a tender moment of intimacy and love. Depicting the artist's wife on their honeymoon night, the painting portrays her spontaneous and joyful leap onto the bed, symbolizing the excitement and bliss of new beginnings. Through simplified shapes and serene expressions, the artist captures the essence of their private conversation and the profound connection shared between them. @Miami_Seduce Year 2020 |
'Poets’ Dream'Year: 2019
Surrealism with some Conceptual Painting Medium: Acrylic on canvas Size: 38 x 48 inches Poets’ Dream is a Surrealist work celebrating José Martí as an Artist.
Inspired by his poems, incorporating images expressed in his stanzas and transferred them onto canvas. Under a Blue Sky is the Sierra Maestra Cubana, which inspired my use of green as a predominant color of the island forests and lush landscape. The palms were inspired by “Yo Soy Un Hombre Sincero” including the butterflies flying from the rubble captured at the base of the painting. Two women are framing the art piece; the first figure has flowing blond-haired and is walking through water representing “Es Rubia, el Cabello suelto”, the second beauty with long brown hair representing “Rosario”. The painting has further symbolic objects such as 'The Labyrinth' representing all the decisions Martí took until his death. You will find in this painting repeated objects in groups of three. The left eye represents Marti, his Bride, and Son. The right eye represents Martí, his love for art, and unrequited love of María García Granados. Towards the center, a tray full of blood symbolizing the sacrifices made for/in his homeland, Cuba, representing further in the Tocororos birds painted in the colors of their flag. This painting contains many repeating objects and colors designed to lose the observers' interest to allow them to focus on the larger view of the picture and reveal the Poet’s face. |
